Using Tapes and Rulers

Feet, inches, and fraction of an inch are the most used units of measurement used by pipefitters in the United States.  Almost every task will involve reading measuring tapes or rulers. From fabricating pipe to finding the right size bolts.

1/2" (one half of an inch) mark is the longest line in the middle of an inch (only 1).
1/4" (one quarter of an inch) mark is the next shortest line. There are only two.
1/8" (one eighth of an inch) mark is the next shortest line. There are four of these.
1/16" (one sixteenth of an inch) mark is the shortest line. There are eight of these.
Note: Some tapes step down to 1/32"

Most tapes like in the picture above shows both feet an inches. The arrow is at 5' 1-5/16" which is the same as 61-5/16".
