Subtracting Fractions

All fraction have at least two numbers. One over the other.    7   (numerator)
 16  (denominator) or 7/16

Subtracting  Fractions With the Same Denominator.  If the fractions you are subtracting have the same (common) denominator you will just need to subtract the top numbers (numerators).
    15   -  3  =  12   =  3
     16     16      16       4

Subtracting Fractions With Different Denominators.   You will need to find a common denominator  when subtracting fractions with different denominators.

Since the denominators are different, you need to find a common denominator. Multiply the denominators   8 x 4 = 32. So the common denominator is 32. You can multiply
7 x 4 = 28                  1 x 8 =  8
8 x 4 = 32      and     4 x 8 = 32
Now that the denominators are the same simply subtract  the top numbers (numerators).

Reduce to lowest denominator.
To find the lowest denominator divide both the numerator and denominator by the largest possible number with no remainder. In this example the numerator and denominator is divided by 4.
